Vegan diet to improve asthma

I'm changing my diet this week, but it not to lose weight, it's for my health.

Anyone who suffers from asthma, will know how horrible it can be. The waking in a night coughing, not being able to finish a sentence because you're out of breath and not being able to run with your kids, because you know it'll bring on an asthma attack. I hate having asthma but most of all I hate having to take medication to control it.

All medicines have side effects, and for this reason five years ago, after a lot of research I decided to change my diet to control my asthma. After just a few weeks on a vegan diet I felt great and took myself off my brown steroid inhaler.

However things didn't stay that way, after a year I slowly started to eat dairy products again, and slowly my asthma got worse. And now I've reached the point in my life where my asthma has never been this bad. In fact my blue reliever inhaler isn't helping one little bit and I'm fed up of not being able to sleep because my breathing is so bad.

I have two choices
Firstly I could take myself to my doctors and get put back onto my brown inhaler along with all the side effects it brings. Or my second option is to go back on to a vegan diet, with no side effects.  A vegan diet helped my asthma before so there's no reason why it shouldn't again.

A vegan diet to improve asthma.

I've already been a vegetarian for the last 20 years, so a vegan diet is just the next step. And to be honest if I start thinking about where milk comes from it does put me off. I mean who on earth first bent their head down under a cow and decided to squeeze milk out from its udder in the first place?

So for the next few weeks I'm going to be following a vegan diet, including plenty of raw foods where possible to see if it'll help me get my asthma back under control. I'm not sure how long I'll stick to a vegan diet this time, but I'll be blogging on how I'm getting on.

  1. Interesting idea - hadn't realised that dairy products had an effect on asthma.
