Special K turns 30
Like special K I also have a big birthday this year, although my birthday is a bit bigger than 30. Which means 30 years ago when Special K first came out I was about 10 years old and I can still remember those, "can you pinch more than an inch?" adverts.
These were back in the days when we had no fast forward button and you actually had to sit and watch the adverts, either that or get up from the sofa and manually change the channel as we didn't have the luxury of a remote control.

So what was my life like 30 years ago?

I loved reading The Jackie magazine
30 years ago, I was young care free and still at school. I lived for Saturdays when I could go to the local sweet shop and buy a Jackie magazine and a quarter of sweets. And choosing which quarter that week, would take me forever.

30 years ago I loved jelly babies!
Penny sweets and pretend cigarettes
Sometimes I would go for Jelly babies, which would be gone by Saturday night or other times it would be sherbert lemons which if I was lucky would last me till Monday.
Or other times I would give the jars a miss and just go for 20p worth of penny sweets. My favourite things to choose were pink shrimps, hubba bubba, fruit salad chews and those pretend cigarettes with red ends, that everyone used to pretend to smoke with, how bad was that?
My biggest worries were learning my spellings and the thought of starting secondary school.
What I did for fun.
I remember going to disco's and wearing bright leg warmers, listening to wham tapes on my personal stereo.
Running round the garden with my siblings playing hide and seek. In fact back when I was 10, the summers seemed to last forever and I can't ever remember a rainy or dull day.
A spectrum 28k
Back in the 80s a big thing for me was getting a spectrum 28k, which was one of the first gaming computers. It was like what a wii or xbox is today. And anyone that ever had one could not forget the length of time it to took to load a game. You'd put a cassette in and it would take about 7 minutes just to load the game, I don't think today's kids could wait that long. I remember having great fun with a kind of bat and ball kind of game, but best of all was the little yellow pac man.
I cycled everywhere! If I wanted to go somewhere, they'd be no lift from my parents I was expected to make my own way and be back before it was dark.
Never, ever, in a million years will I ever get my hair permed again !!!!!!!!!!
I loved shopping at Chelsea Girl
Back when I was 10 I was allowed to catch the bus and go into town with my friends. This was back in the days of no internet shopping or out of town malls, so our towns were full of shops. And who could forget the delights of shopping in the likes of Chelsea girl, back then if you had a new top from Chelsea girl, you were really cool.
My life 30 years later

Me, 30 years later with my three children!
30 years later and although I don't really feel that different however life has aged me and middle age is starting to show. Growing up in the 80s with all the sweets has sadly taken it's toll on my teeth with a mouthful of fillings.
A wedding, my own home and three children have changed my life forever. But like special K, I've grown stronger and wiser with age.
My biggest worries now are keeping my children happy, paying the bills and losing weight.

A bowl of Special K
30 years later I'd sooner snack on special K than Jelly babies!
30 years ago I loved snacking on sweets and wouldn't have touched a bowl of special K. But now I'd much sooner snack on a bowl of special K. I was sent a box of the new special K to try out and I absolutely loved it.
Special K is now made with wholegrain (three to be exact – wheat, rice and barley) and is also a source of fibre and contains 8 vitamins and iron.
Would I buy this product?
Yes.
Marks out of 10
I give this a top score of 10 out of 10.
What I do for fun now.
Playing with my kids, long walks and reading books.
What hasn't changed in 30 years.
I still watch coronation street like I did when I was 10 years old. Well actually now I think about it, I was only allowed to watch coronation street till the first set of adverts when I was 10 as my bedtime was 7:45, I couldn't wait to turn 11 so I'd be allowed to stay up and watch the whole show.
Now I sit and watch Coronation street with my two daughters who love it as much as I did, except we pre record it and can fast forward the adverts.
Would I change anything over the last 30 years?
No, because the ups and downs I've dealt with have made me the person I am today. Without that I wouldn't be me, we learn from our mistakes and it makes us stronger. The last 30 years have shaped me as a person and even though I've got a few more wrinkles and grey hair appearing, I look forward to what the next 30 years will bring.
